Santa Barbara to Morro Bay

Up again at 0400 to slip out into the darkness out of Santa Barbara past Point Conception to Morro Bay.

As many of you may recall last July Jim and Lara (with the calm and untroubled Russell Vinton aboard) had an eye opening Point Conception experience so you can imagine that we were slightly apprehensive about the travels today. Point Conception is well known as the sailor’s nemesis for these waters. However; once again the Buoy Reports were excellent. Green all the way.

The day was amazing! Like a lake trip.

Michael whipped up a hot breakfast around 0900 (second breakfast for some of us). We marveled at the marine with Fin Whales, dolphins and Sea Lions galore along the trip.

We rounded the infamous Point Conception at 1000. It was so uneventful that Jim wanted to catch a shower. However; Lara (Who is the Boss of him) forbade showers as we passed Point Conception (thinking it would be bad JuJu). We all enjoyed Jim’s stink and the light house at Point Conception (Jim Note: SOMEONE has to tend to the engine on this barge so if they want the big heat maker to keep running, they have to put up with the occasional “oeduer”)

Lara baked brownies for a mid morning snack and we agreed that lunch would be pot luck leftovers.

The men went off for manly naps (separate beds!) and the girls took the helm and chatted merrily as we continued up the coast. With the exception of a large NOAA research vessel we did not see anyone for most of the day.

Cell phones came into range and we all made various “urgent” work related calls. More whales showed up along with Sea Otters (they are so cute). Much attempts at photography.

Michael broke out the appetizers and cocktail hour ensued just before 4pm!

We reviewed Morro Harbor and our various roles to get the boat in a slip for the night. More tomorrow on our luck on that endeavor.
