You're doing WHAT? Whenever we tell people that we're going to spend 7 weeks on a sailboat in the Caribbean, they always ask, "How long have you been sailing?" "Well, including the 3 days in San Diego last month....3 days."
Why are you doing this? For the last 20 years, Lara and I have enjoyed planning and taking fun adventures. This has been one of those "When the kids go off to college" plans. 10 months ago, Lara looked at me and said, "The kids are in college, it's time to go sailing." About 14 seconds later, I had the boat reserved.....
Do you just show up and get on the boat? Well, this is a "bareboat" charter (that doesn't mean we are all bare on the boat). We will have a captain for the first couple of days to make sure we are not a hazard to navigation (although we did sign up for the damage liability waiver!). After that, we're on our own.
Where do you eat? Mostly we will eat on the boat. The First Mate (Lara) was responsible for developing the menus and buying the food that we're taking with us. The Cook (Lara) will be handling meal preparation and serving. The Galley Slave (Lara) will clean up afterwards. The Captain (Jim) will express boundless admiration for all their efforts.
What about MJ & Emily? Well, they ARE in college and we don't want to interfere with their education. When they finish finals, we did break down and send them plane tickets and a weatherbeaten map so they can find us in a deserted cove for Christmas.
What about the dogs? Belle was the easiest. I'm putting her on a plane to Minnesota to spend the whole time hunting pheasants with my buddy Ron. The two old codgers (Sheba and Grumpy) are going to a kennel in southern AZ.
What about the house? Well, it's insured....
How will you stay in touch? Who says we're going to stay in touch? (Just kidding!) We will try to post to this blog every few days. Posting comments to this blog is the easiest way to get messages to us. I will have a satellite phone to call out if needed, but I really can't get calls on it.
