3. Fort San Cristobol in San Juan (notice rain and heavy surf).
We got up early this morning (5am) to catch the ferry from Culebra to Fajardo, P.R. enroute to San Juan. Our plan was to rent a car in Fajardo and drive to San Juan. After we locked up the dingy and jumped over a locked gate to get out of the dock area, things seemed to be going well until we got to Fajardo. While walking to the car rental place, a taxi driver offered to take us to San Juan for $40.00. Since the car rental was only going to be about $35.00 for the day, we politely declined.
When we arrived at the car rental counter, we discovered that Jim had apparently had the first of many senior moments for the day and had left his drivers license on the boat (safely anchored in Culebra - almost 2 hours away by ferry). So it was back to the taxi driver where the price had mysteriously risen to $60.00 in the inteceding 15 minutes...something like a 15000% annual inflation rate....
So we kindly accepted his "new" price and we were off to San Juan. In the rain. Lots of rain. Oh, I forgot to mention that our rain gear was also back on the boat (the Captain having forgotten to check the weather forecast).
Once in San Juan, we found to our dismay that it is easier to get TO San Juan than it is to get OUT of San Juan. The high speed ferry is operating for this week only from Fajardo instead of San Juan. The air taxi service apparently doesn't answer their phones on the first Saturday in December. And the taxi's are now $80.00 to go back to Fajardo. Yippee.
After all the "senior moments" by Jim (including a panicked search for the sunglasses ON HIS FACE), Lara is convinced that he is tremendously sweet to be doing all these things to make her feel good about HER senior moments. Sounds good to me.
In addition to everything else the Captain forgot today, I guess he'll have to forget the infamous Toothbrush Mutiny...

Hi Jim & Lara!
Love the travelogue & pictures. Other than a few weather challenges it sounds like the trip is going great.
Bye for now.

LOL, very funny post! No worries though, MJ and I (the skilled and fearless, Coast Guard member of the family) will soon be there to help you two out. Can't wait!

Jim and Lara,
Nancy and I have very much enjoyed your writings. Almost makes me wish we were with you...until I remember that you're cruising in water over my head in a boat with a joke for a motor.
Quick update from Singapore: just finished the marathon here. Knees hurt, but finished the dumb thing. I'll now spend the next 2-3 limping around, sitting at every opportunity, and wondering why I was such a moron.
Spent Thanksgiving in Vietnam on a boat. You'd be proud. 'Course, it had 7 staterooms and 7 crewmen. We almost, but not quite, got tired of shrimp and crab for eatin'!
More later. Be careful.

Thanks for the great blog!! enjoy it each day!! will be sure to share with the class of 98 at the dinner tomorrow night...we will miss you....as for planning...do you start each day with a plan? do you have a master schedule of places to go and see? or do you just head out and see what happens...I find this last option hard to believe knowing Lara...but I thought I would ask...also, do you eat on board? or do you find it easier to eat on land while you are out and about? how has the food been? at this point, what do you miss? is it the space to move about on the boat? it seems a bit small sometimes.....love to read your stuff..thanks for sharing!!
Rena
