Finally underway!

Photo: This is the dock I was tied to. It gives you and idea of how tight it was and the type of boats in the harbor.

Friday morning dawned just as calm as it was yesterday. Instead of the forecasted winds and seas, we had fog (which generally doesn’t coexist well with windy conditions) and just a moderate 6’-8’ long period swell. The harbor looked like cockroaches in a tenement kitchen when the lights are turned on. Boats everywhere were scurrying out to sea to go fishing! So I checked with the Coast Guard and talked to a few of the fishermen and decided it was time to go.
I paid my berthing bill (surprisingly inexpensive) and got underway. There was a slight current pulling my boat away from the dock so singlehanded casting off was somewhat exciting. I had to figure out what order to take the lines off and do it very quickly so I would still be able to jump aboard once the last line was free. With a quick blast from the thrusters I managed to avoid hitting anything and then worked my way out to sea.
I am heading toward Shelter Cove to anchor for the night and then will hopefully sneak around Cape Mendocino just before dawn.

Hey Jim! You have no idea how badly I wanted to be there for that, man oh well. I'm really glad you finally made it out of there and that you didn't have to deal with those Hertz people :)

Love hearing the updates...It didn't occur to me how hard it must be to cast off without a line handler...kudos to you!
Love you!
