Generally, the seas were fairly benign and we saw whales (including one about 50' off the starboard beam), dolphins in the bow wave and one killer whale. Orca Net has posters in all marinas asking mariners to contact them with the details of any killer whale sightings so I called them with the lat/lon and time when we saw the killer whale.
We finally made it into Coquille River (Port of Bandon) around 8pm. Since the office was closed, they told us to just tie up and the stay was free! The slip was about 10' shorter than we needed it to be so the docking and tying up process was a bit exciting.
The tides at Coquille River are pretty big so we will have to wait until around 7am on Friday to get underway. You can only enter and depart the harbor on a flood tide since the bar builds up very steep and hazardous seas on the ebb (when the water rushing out meets the sea swells coming in). We've been chatting with the local Coast Guard patrol and they are a friendly and helpful bunch.
The town here is pretty small and all concentrated right in the harbor. There are a number of small restaurants within a few hundred yards of our boat and an obviously renovated boardwalk area along the harbor edge. I suspect this must be a fairly common tourist destination although I can't figure out why (unless it's just to come to the coast and see the ocean?).
