Night Running

After 36 straight hours at Sea we arrived at Newport, Oregon. Having navigated these waters before, Jim was comfortable coming into this port at 11pm - another moonless night.

The first day at Sea was difficult. After so many days in calm waters, the open ocean made us both a little sick. Kind of flu like: headache, nausea, ache stiffness (it’s a bit of a work out on the body to constantly adjust/shift to the boat).

On top of it, the wave patterns were tossing us a bit (with an occasional roll where you had to hang on). After the previous night of poor sleep and adrenaline surges neither of us was in best form for the rigor of standing 24 hour watch.
Late in the afternoon the Coast Guard MLB (out of Neah Bay) hailed us, passed at high speed on our starboard on their way from another rescue. Here they are waving at us from the upper deck.

That first night was DARK. There was only a small sliver of the moon and a crystal clear sky.

With the movement of the boat, an awesome blanket of stars and pitch dark; I felt like I was in a space ship flying through space.

We had gone 12 miles off shore just to make sure we were free from crab pots. There were few others out there (unlike the conjestion of the inside passage).

We had a spectacular sun down that night.
