What an effort to slog our way into the San Juan’s. Once again, the currents and narrows between the islands were more than we anticipated and the expected 8 hour trip ended up at over 10 hours. At one point, we found ourselves in a tidal current, eddy, turbulation – just a mess of confused waters. Think of your bathtub: put a little boat in there and then let the water out (it would be best if you had two competing drains). The pushing and pulling on the boat rudder, along with the rocking, is what it is like. Lara runs around quieting rattling flotsam. After about 20 minutes of guide book consultations we finally found a comment in one of our four guide books: “Beware of tidal currents running up to 5 knots around Boiling Reef, off the tip of East Point” – Ohhhhhhh Nice to know.
The following day we “in processed” to the USA with Customs officials at Friday Harbor, San Juan Island. They state that NO poultry, meats, vegetables and fruits are allowed in the USA; as well as limitations on alcohol. Lara had visions of the entire refrigerator/freezer being emptied out and was devising ways to protect her food stash. Happily, no one even came aboard and so she pulled food from every floorboard and restocked the coolers (just kidding).
Customs Dock Shack
Seriously, it is such an undertaking to get and keep fresh meats/vegetables etc... (as well as cost and time) that the thought of having to fully restock is not a welcome endeavor.
Since we got in after dark they let us stay overnight (for free) on the Customs Dock (as long as we were gone by 0800).
